PREFACE

Within will be found the correct census of the in-
habitants of Carthage, Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Vass,
Cameron, Aberdeen, and Hemp, their occupation and
streets upon which they live.

Also a classification of the business interests, which
go to make Moore County one of the most flourishing
counties in the state.

The census was taken by a house to house canvas
and if any names have been omitted it is the fault of
the people who gave them to the canvasser.

The compiler has been very careful in gathering
the facts and has aimed to make the book thoroughly
reliable.

A limited space has been given to advertising,
which has been eagerly sought for and obtained by the
most enterprising business men of the county.

The compiler hereby makes acknowledgement to
all for their assistance in giving the necessary data.

The city officials will see how necessary it is to name
their streets and place the names at all intersections of
streets and also to number the houses.

MOORE COUNTY

Moore County was formed in 1784 from Cumber-
land County and named after Hon. Alfred Moore, one
of the United States Supreme Judges. This county is
located near the center of the state, North and South
and East and West. It has a population of about 23,-
000, 7,000 of which are colored.

The northern part of the county is hilly and has a
clay soil, while the southern part is level and sandy.
The Seaboard Railway runs through the county and a
couple of other roads are within its borders. The
county is supplied with abundant water power only
waiting to be harnessed up. It also has gold, talc, clay
and millstones. Moore County is situated in the heart
of the peach district of North Carolina. It also has the
two noted winter resorts — Pinehurst and Southern
Pines, where thousands of northen people spend their
winters with pleasure.

There are more peaches shipped out of this county
than any other in the state.

A new court house, costing $160,000, was finished
and ready for occupancy just about two years ago.

MOORE COUNTY DIRECTORY.

CARTHAGE, N. C.

Carthage is the capitol of Moore County and was
formerly called Feaganville. It is 900 feet above sea-
level and was settled before the Revolution and was
noted for being the home of some of the most noted
Tories in the State.

It revels in ancient U. S. history and the citizens re-
count with great pleasure the fact that they can show a
mulberry stump that Cornwallis' horse nipped off the
top when it was a small shrub.

It has two hotels, one fine large high school, which
cost -$60,000 and also a graded school that cost $20,-
000. Two colored schools are within the corporate
limits. Prof. O. B. Walsh is the superintendent of the
city schools. There are 15 white teachers with 423
pupils and six colored teachers with 194 pupils.

It has one bank; one newspaper; water works, own-
ed by the city; a volunteer fire department; a local tele-
phone system and one railroad, the Moore County Cen-
tral, which connects the north and south part of the
county. The Carolina Light and Power Co. furnish the
electricity both for lights and power.

There are three churches, Presbyterian, Baptist and
Methodist. There are only three secret orders — the
Masonic, J. O. U. A. M., and the Woodmen of the
World.

A knitting mill and a large buggy works, two lum-
ber yards and a machine shop is the extent of the busi-
ness here outside of the mercantile establishments
which display all the commodities that the citizens de-
mand.

The town is not as energetic as it might be owing to
the fact that most of the people are not compelled to go
after the almighty dollar.

CITY OFFICERS

Mayor, R. L. Burns; clerk, W. H. Currie; city coun-
cil, W. H. Currie, J. A. Lang, O. D. Wallace, C. F.
Barnes, P. K. Kennedy.

The population is slightly under 1,000.

CAMERON, N. C.

Cameron is located on the Seabord Railway, ten
miles south of Carthage, in a very productive farming
center. It is a small village of 200 inhabitants. Busi-
ness is carried on here in about the same style it was
fifty years ago. But very little enterprise, if any.

VASS, N. C.

When the Seaboard Railway was built there was a
station at this place called Bynum. All there was here
was a place with a siding to load lumber, turpentine
and resin. Later on the name was changed to Winder.
It went under this name until eighteen years ago when
it was changed to Vass.

The town remained as only a stopping place for the
local train up to about five years ago when the town
took on new life and some men with a great amount of
people took hold of things. There has been more
building done in the past five years than during all of
its existence.

The products of this section are tobacco, cotton,
peaches and dewberries.

There is one bank, one cotton mill, one newspaper,
The Pilot, which was adjudged to be the best weekly
paper in the state by the state editors in convention, a
local telephone system, one tobacco warehouse, two
churches, a graded school with nine teachers and 275
pupils. Prof. W. D. Mathews is superintendent of the
town schools and mayor of the town.

The town is located ten miles south of Carthage on
the Seaboard Railway, and sixty-eight miles southwest
of Raleigh. It has 295 residents.

J. M. Brown's, Hemp, N. C.

HEMP, N. C.

Hemp is a town of about four hundred inhabitants,
and although it has a small number of residents, it
has mercantile establishments that do as much business
as any place in Moore County.

It is located on the Norfolk Southern Railway about
twelve miles from Carthage. It has a prosperous bank,
a silk mill, two lumber plants and a Presbyterian Aca-
demy, with about 100 students. There are two dormi-
tories, one for the girls and one for the boys. The pub-
lic school building where the town pupils go to school
is a very poor affair.

The merchants in most cases are wide-awake and
and in consequence they enjoy a good trade.

His Line — Aberdeen, N. C.

ABERDEEN, N. C.

This town was started in 1888, twelve years after
the Seaboard Railway was completed. It formerly
went by the name of Buie's Crossing, but the name was
changed to Aberdeen in 1888. It was chartered in
1893. Good schools for both white and black are
maintained. More peaches and dewberries are ship-
ped from this point than any other in the country.
There are three railroads — the Seaboard, the Norfolk
Southern and A. & R. Railways.

A large crate factory, several bonded warehouses
for tobacco and cotton, a peach exchange, one bank,
two hotels, and numerous mercantile establishments.
Some very fine church buildings and some very fine
mansions.

Several miles of paved streets, electric lights, tele-
phone service and most everything modern. This town
is the gateway to Pinehurst for tourists. All Seaboard
trains leave the tourists here and a short line takes them
up to Pinehurst.

MOORE COUNTY DIRECTORY.

SOUTHERN PINES, N. C.

Along about 1884 John T. Patrick bought the pres-
ent site of Southern Pines for 50c per acre. And in 1886
what was called the New England Mining & Estate Co.
laid it out on the generous lines that are extant here
today.

It is located on the Seaboard Railway, about six
miles from Pinehurst. Up to a few years ago Mr. Pat-
rick had a percentage on every ticket sold to Southern
Pines, which made him independently wealthy.

The town is located in the famous peach belt of
North Carolina and is fast becoming one of the famous
winter resorts of the country. It is the most modern
town in Moore County and its citizens are full of pep
and with their up-to-date Chamber of Commerce they
do not overlook anything that will redound to the bene-
fit of the town or its citizens. The 'Native Son' idea
has been eliminated and every person "stands on his
own tub."

The normal population of the town is about 1,000,
but with the coming of the six months residents in the
winter, the population is swelled up to nearly 3,000
people. The town is modern, having water works,
sewerage, telephone, electric lights, paved streets and
a city directory.

S. B. Richardson is the very popular mayor and un-
der his administration the town has made great strides
along the way of improvements.

Fine large high school building, occupying a whole
square, affords ample facilities for the education of the
youths and children.

There are four churches, the Baptist, the Congrega-
tional, Episcopal and Catholic. The Masonic order has
a blue lodge — two Chapters, one Council a Com-
mandery, and a Magnolia Chapter. The I. O. O. F. has
a flourishing order. The American Legion has a post
and there is also a Community Club. The Civic Club
has been doing yoeman service for the town. The Girl
Scouts also have a flourishing order. Then there is the

Country Club, which has a very fine building west of
town on the Aberdeen Road. One bank and a great
number of mercantile establishments furnish almost
everything in their line.

While there are about 15 hotels that cater to the
residents and tourists in almost any style that can be
desired with prices according.

PINEHURST, N. C.

James W. Tuft, of Boston, Mass., started this winter
resort in 1896. It is located in the long leaf pine dis-
trict. It has a very mild climate and is one of the most
famous winter resorts in the South. Especially so to
all lovers of golf, tennis and polo.

It is a close corporation and Tuft owns the controll-
ing interest. There are only a few business places here
that are not owned by the corporation.

Some of the houses are owned by outside parties,
but upon the leased land of the company. It is strictly
a winter resort and only a few care takers stay here the
year round. For this reason the directory of this place
is omitted, as it is purely transient.
