police in washington, d.c. cleared out a pro-palestinian encampment at george washington university. it was after midnight when d.c. police forced protesters to leave the campus. the university says it had asked the city to intervene for days, but that d.c. mayor muriel bowser had initially refused, saying people have the right to protest. a member of congress who walked through the encampment yesterday said jewish students he spoke with said it made them feel uncomfortable. i talked to the jewish students here just minutes ago. >> they told me they're afraid to be on their campus. they're scared. >> mayor bowser has been called to testify before congress today about the city's response to the encampment. >> well, demonstrators across the nation urged israel to end its offensive in rafah. the israeli military says it has seized control of that border crossing at the southern edge of gaza, protesters from seattle to austin, texas, and atlanta took part in what's called hands off

rafah rallies is now here in the bay area. demonstrators in berkeley joined the protesters at uc berkeley, sproul plaza, that's where people have been camping out for days. ktvu tori gaines talk to some of the protesters who've increased their demands. all eyes on you. >> all eyes on you. >> we will never leave you here at uc berkeley, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members filled sproul plaza with chants for revolution in response to israel's attacks on rafah. it's been nearly two weeks since the pro-palestine encampment sprouted up at cal, and the number of tents has grown. a lot of people from different faiths, from different ethnic backgrounds, from different political beliefs, all here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right now is something that we have the power to impact and power to stop some faculty members on campus stood and chanted side by side with their students in

calling for divestment. >> so many of us are sort of forced to be complicit with, you know, illegal, immoral war that is being waged on innocent populations in our name with our funds. >> demonstrators in support of palestine have been particularly vocal on uc berkeley's campus. while some students feel empowered by the demonstrations, others see them in a different light. >> i've never felt more ostracized or isolated ever in my life, nor have i ever felt such an overwhelming feeling of anxiety and distress. s simply just existing. just simply being in my existence as a jewish american. >> though some students are struggling with the new reality on campus, one faculty member tells us he has full faith in his students. >> this is the best public school in the world. why wouldn't we trust these students to understand how to negotiate with their administration? what are just unnecessary demands? do we trust our youth or not? and i

think that i do as you can see, the encampment is still here, going strong. >> students and other demonstrators here at the encampment tell us that they are willing to stay here as long as it takes to see their divestment goals met. we reached out to uc berkeley for comment on today's rally, but the university had no statement to offer in berkeley. tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, tori, thank you. time is now 404. the biden administration says israel's move to take over the rafah crossing between gaza and egypt is not the full scale invasion of the city. israel said it would carry out. yesterday, an israeli tank brigade closed the rafah crossing. israel says the border crossing had been used by hamas, so it was important to shut it down. >> this was a, a very limited operation designed to cut off, hamas's ability to smuggle more weapons and funding into gaza. >> now, the biden administration has been discouraging israel

from launching a full scale ground operation in rafah. that's where a 1 million displaced palestinians have taken shelter. the united states reportedly paused a shipment of bombs to israel last week over the concerns they would be used in an assault on rafah, stanford university is reminding students that the encampment at white plaza violates university policies. >> now, officials say it goes against a policy on overnight camping and on the equitable use of the plaza. the university says discipline cases are proceeding and more names of students are being submitted. some may have their diplomas held while their cases are processed, and stanford is warning encampment members. they could be suspended. >> our time is now 406 happening today. testimony in front of congress by the superintendent of the berkeley unified school district surrounding allegations of anti-semitism in her schools. now, superintendent nikki ford. mortal, will testify in front of the house subcommittee on

education. a federal complaint was filed back in march against berkeley schools, claiming that no action was taken to stop the harassment of jewish students. school leaders from berkeley, new york city, and montgomery county, maryland are expected to take part in today's congressional hearing. now, you can find complete coverage of the war in gaza and the reaction here in the united states online. just go to our website, kctv icu.com. >> two former students who sued saint francis high school in mountain view have been awarded $1 million. now, the plaintiffs claim school administrators forced them out over an alleged black face photo. the former students say it showed them masked in acne medication. a santa clara jury sided with the students, deciding the school violated a non-disclosure agreement. school officials say they are exploring legal options , including an appeal. >> our time is 407. an arrest was made and a man is now in

jail after he ran a red light at a busy intersection in san jose and killed a cyclist. it happened yesterday morning at east capitol expressway and center road around 730 in the morning. investigators say the driver of this red pickup truck was going westbound on capitol expressway and was speeding when he ran a red light. the truck first hit a cyclist and then hit another pickup truck. the man on the bike died there at the scene. traffic was shut down for hours in all directions. i think everybody just needs to be aware. >> i think road safety is everyone's responsibility, so it includes being defensive on your own, right? i'm not sure that there's a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here. if you're following the rules of the road. somebody wasn't. and unfortunately, that's what occurred. >> now, this was the 17th fatal collision in san jose. so far this year. and police say that particular intersection is among the most dangerous in the city for the number of crashes every year. now, san jose mayor matt

mehan, in a statement said, quote, these deaths are far too often the consequence of distracted and reckless driving, and i applaud the work of our police department and district attorney who will arrest and prosecute those who put residents at risk on our roadways. >> filmmaker john waters is recovering after a car crash. waters is known for cold classics like pink flamingos and crybaby. he was hit by a cargo van in maryland this week, a report by the baltimore sun says the driver of the van ran a red light and rammed into waters 2015 buick lacrosse. he was kept in the hospital overnight in response to the accident, the 78 year old said, quote, it hurts when i laugh, but all is okay. >> our time is now. 409 will bay area drivers have a tough time? two bay area cities made the top of the list of the worst cities in the country for drivers. oakland was named as the worst city in the nation for drivers.

san francisco came in number three. the study, conducted by forbes advisor, evaluated driving conditions across 47 densely populated cities. the city of oakland had the top spot for several reasons, including a high number of deadly crashes, very high gas prices, and long commute times. miami came in number two. houston was number four. >> today is national wine walk, bike and roll to school day to mark the occasion, marin, santa clara and solano counties are holding special events for students in petaluma. extra police officers will be in and around multiple school zones as part of a safe routes to school safety operation, so watch out for all those kids walking and rolling to school today. all right, let's check in steve paulson. >> lots of sunshine today on the menu and warmer temps here. a little bit of a northerly breeze is kicking in as a little low

starts to backtrack towards southern cal. well actually southern arizona, but you can see a little northerly breeze. not too crazy, although mount tam north at 31, that's a north wind up in the oakland berkeley hills north at 34 right above the claremont. so that's going to translate into warmer temps. fairfield north gusting to 23. santa rosa north. so temps are on their way up. start a little bit yesterday. it'll be more so today. probably topping out thursday. upper 80s is the way it's kind of looking here. 40s 50s 60s if you get a breeze. napa airport it's 63. vacaville 63. and otherwise you get 40s and 50s a little cooler up towards, some areas to mendocino county, lake county, but middletown and konocti are in the 50 sonoma napa. there's your north breeze, 60s. although healdsburg is at 46 point, ray's at 46. so there's some cool ones and there's some warm ones here. 2333 truckee, south lake tahoe, 70 already in palm springs, arcadia at 39 degrees. my goodness. high pressure though this is a dry pattern this week. and what happens is this low

will backtrack a little bit. a piece of it will. it looks like it's going to stay in southern arizona or southern nevada, northern arizona and not drag drag across southern california. but still, we'll get a warmer pattern here. summer like pattern here. sunny and warmer and no fog coast. even the coast will warm up, so look for 60s 70s and some 80s. >> san francisco's taking action to better protect first responders. the effort to change how firefighters gear is made. plus with covid, let's go! >> soccer fans were out in the south bay for a match between the oakland roots and the san jose earthquakes. why? this could be the start of

wide ban. the social media app and its chinese parent company have filed a lawsuit against the us. their suit challenges a new law that could ban the app in america if it's not sold to a new buyer within nine months. tiktok officials argue the law is an unconstitutional attack on free speech. however, lawmakers feel tiktok poses a national security risk. >> they're trying to make it about free speech. this bill was focused on national security that tiktok is a destructive tool pointed at the united states of america, and especially our children. no constitutional right to own property when it is against the national security. >> tiktok's parent company says it currently has no plans to sell if tiktok loses this lawsuit and refuses to find a new owner, it could disappear from american app stores. >> our time is now. 415 president biden approved a new law that strengthens penalties for websites and social media

companies that fail to report sex and abuse crimes against children. this is the first time the platforms have been required to report federal trafficking and enticement crimes to the national center for missing and exploited children. the law increases the fines on companies that knowingly or willfully don't report child sex abuse materials, and the evidence of these crimes is now required to be preserved longer, allowing more time for investigations. >> well, thousands of fans headed to paypal park for a big game between the oakland roots and the san jose earthquakes. it was the first competitive match between the two teams, and the quakes took home the victory. >> but as ktvu lamonica peters tells us, the fans say they hope it's not the last time these two teams play each other. >> with bay area bragging rights on the line. san jose earthquakes fans say they were looking forward to playing the roots.

run inning. giants snapped a four game losing streak with a50 win against the rockies. the a's will play a doubleheader at the coliseum against the texas rangers today. the a's look to bounce back after losing the series opener, but the rangers put on a show in front of about 4000 fans in oakland, texas set a season high with 19 hits. they also had 15 runs. a's lost 15 to 8, their third straight loss after going on a six game winning streak. >> our time now for 18. the san jose sharks will have the number one pick in this year's nhl draft. for the first time in the sharks history. i take it they're excited. the first pick is expected to be macklin celebrini from boston university, who is also the son of warriors head of sports medicine rick celebrini. the sharks will also have the 14th overall pick in the draft. the draft will be held june 28th at

the las vegas sphere, where they could certainly use that number one draft pick. and he's supposed to be really good. >> yeah, yeah, i know steve would would agree. the sharks could use use a little help. >> deserved a number one pick. it's the sharks. seriously. yes. so that's a good pick. they'll get celebrini for sure. he has san jose and local ties. >> yeah it's awesome. >> yeah. so good for the sharks. they need a boost of some good energy there. and they got it. all right. we're warming up here and temperatures will start to jump. i mean inland temps maybe by thursday could bump up to near 90 for some. although there's a huge discrepancy between the gfs and the other couple of what we call the forecast temps on the model output. so we'll we'll ease into it. it'll warm up. there's a decent north breeze, especially in the oakland berkeley hills. it's already kicked in out to fairfield as well. santa rosa north and everything's coming down from the north is that little piece of energy from this low is backtracking. that's kind of the key little piece of this is going to drop. it looks like

it wants to settle in around las vegas and not back into southern california or central. that makes a huge difference. everything i've seen puts it in southern nevada or northern arizona, which, you know, we still get an offshore breeze, but not a roaring one, is the way it looks for so far, the water temps are incredibly cold. point race 50, san francisco bowie 50. when we get these warm temps, all it will take is a little push from a west wind and that fog will roar back, but probably not for a couple of days. 40s, 50s to 60s, napa and vacaville, both at 63 brentwood, 62. pittsburgh 61 because they have that north breeze, but a lot of 40s, 50s on the temps. 2333 truckee, south lake tahoe, 31 alturas and also mammoth grass valley, though at 50. so for the next couple of days it's all about sunshine, dry conditions and warmer temps. i do think though, with that cold, cold ocean temps it won't take much to get the fog back, but it won't be until probably friday, maybe saturday as the way it looks. nothing showing up rain wise yet. i think we have to

attorneys about this case. >> quack, quack. this youtube video captures jordan semler's breakdancing skills. his stage was often pier 39. in san francisco. i see a man that loved his craft, jordan was very happy in bringing smiles to other people's lives and their faces. but that joy with which jordan lived his life suddenly ended. on november 25th, 2022. he was found dead in the driveway of the apartment building in the diamond heights neighborhood, where he lived with his longtime girlfriend, sarah buchanan. she had stabbed him once near the chest. buchanan was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month, and sentenced to three years, but she's expected to be released next month with credit for time served. >> they're shocked to, so i'm still working through that. >> buchanan will be free less than two years after killing jordan, her attorney released a statement which said in part, the verdict was both fair and

just because it was based on the applicable law and relevant evidence presented at the trial. >> i want to expose and share that the legal process is not fair and just simpler, says there was no black juror in the trial and she says there were crucial evidence and witnesses ruled inadmissible. >> the district attorney's office said in part, we take each case seriously and put on the best case we can based on the facts, evidence and the law to meet our burden of proof. in this case, we sought a conviction for murder, and the jury returned a conviction of involuntary manslaughter. >> there is a great issue with men that suffer with domestic violence, but it's something that's not visible. or it's not, focused on. >> sempler says her brother suffered from emotional and physical abuse in his ten year relationship with buchanan, according to court documents. jordan came home drunk, woke buchanan up and called her

derogatory names. she said she lunged at him with a knife to scare him and account that sampler says doesn't tell the whole story. >> there is, this this emotion, this feeling of wanting to persist, to just persist, to fight. >> sempler tells me she's frustrated and will fight for justice tonight. to her brother, jordan, buchanan is expected to be released june 14th. at her next court hearing, sempler says the family will take action, including filing a civil lawsuit against buchanan, amber lee, ktvu, fox two news all right, amber, thank you times for 33 oakland police now asking for help to identify a person of interest in the deadly shooting. >> now, the police released this sketch after the shooting last year on august 30th. two people were found with gunshot wounds on east 18th street near fifth avenue. demy williams of oakland was pronounced dead. oakland police says the suspect was seen driving a white ford f-150

pickup truck. if you have any information, contact oakland police. >> funeral arrangements are pending for an alameda county dispatcher killed by a suspected drunk driver, 37 year old antoinette finau was driving to work last sunday night when a car broadsided her honda civic at a san leandro intersection. the crash occurred just blocks from the sheriff's dispatch center. sheriff's deputies, who for now worked closely with, were the first on the scene. >> she was coming to work on an overtime shift after she had already completed a regular hours shift. because she is that person. she was someone that all of us could have called when we had problems. >> so the fact that she's actually the 911 person answering the phone, it's perfect. it was a perfect job for her. >> a procession escorted feanor's body from eden medical center to the coroner's bureau in oakland. she has an 11 year old daughter who is has been struggling with the loss. and

right before mother's day, ktvu has learned that the suspect, 32 year old lynette davis, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and dui. our time is 435. >> the alameda county da's office released its annual report on its efforts during the past year. that report shows prosecutors saw a slight increase in the number of reports from local law enforcement. just under 12,000 charges were filed in about 63% of those cases. district attorney pamela price says her office wants to provide information on specific charges and outcomes, but that will take a little longer. the tracking of the way in which charges ultimately get resolved has not been a feature of this case management system, which also just came online in the fall of 2019. and now the da's office had just started using the system when covid forced the courts to shut down. district

attorney price says her office hopes to launch a public dashboard that breaks down the case resolution stats by the end of the year, the san francisco unified school district is considering closing down some schools as it struggles with low enrollment and a budget crisis. >> last night, students and parents spoke out at a special district meeting. the district discussed its latest financial audit, which shows the district is barely meeting the minimum financial economic reserve. at the same time, the district is facing a large deficit and low enrollment numbers to save money, the district is considering layoffs and school closures. >> if you actually move forward with 33 kids in one class between fourth and eighth grade, that there will be more parents that leave the district to either go to private charters or private schools. because 33 kids is too many kids. >> a list of possible closures is expected in the fall. the auditor also found that the

problems with the district's payroll system from last year have been substantially corrected. >> our time now for 37, a new milestone for sustainability in san francisco. almost 150 businesses have earned certifications from the city for their environmental leadership. the city's environmental department says 147 certifications were awarded this year between july of 2022 and march of 2024, one of the highest rates since the program started. more than 20 years ago. now, last year, the city certified green businesses saved more than a million gallons of water and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 264,000 pounds. >> san francisco voters could decide on a proposal to simplify the city's tax codes for small businesses. it's all part of an effort to revitalize the city now. the proposal would expand tax exemptions for more than 2500 small businesses and cut taxes for hotels, arts,

anti-semitism. the district has been accused of poorly handling cases of bullying and harassment of jewish students since the hamas attack on israel. ktvu james torres is in berkeley this morning previewing what we can expect to see from the us capitol this morning. james >> yeah, pam, it's a hearing that's led by the u.s. house committee on education and the workforce. that group of lawmakers held some similar hearings on anti-semitism with leaders of major public school universities. but this will be the first time that they'll be asking questions and holding a hearing when it comes to anti-semitism within public k through 12 schools. now, these types of hearings have happened often ever since we first learned about the hamas attacks on israel on october 7th. and, of course, israel's retaliation in gaza. since berkeley superintendent initiate ford morthal is one of three school leaders across the country called to testify in front of this house committee. she'll be expected to answer questions alongside representatives from a

school district in maryland as well as new york. each have been accused by their local communities, some in court of facilitating a culture of bullying jewish students and not properly handling complaints when they arise. in berkeley, complaints have been led by the brandeis center for human rights and the anti-defamation league. they argue, be used ignored incidents where jewish students were taunted and exposed to language such as kill the jews or kill israel. their complaints note an incident where an art teacher showed images of people punching through a star of david as well. berkeley school board releasing a statement of support for its superintendent, saying in part, berkeley unified school district stands against anti-semitism, islamophobia and hate in all forms. this is reiterated in the hate motivated behavior policy in the board passed last year, which the superintendent has been charged to implement. now, the house committee meeting hearing, i should say, will be streamed live from washington, d.c. we'll

two years so that it can recover financially. also talked about at the meeting last night, an outside report from another state agency that detailed some of the district's financial problems, among them the fact that sfusd doesn't have a chief business officer and hasn't had one in a few years. at the board meeting last night, several parents and community members were upset. >> you haven't had a financial officer for years. page nine calls out the overuse of consultants. why are we not managing this better? you're going to close schools instead of fix what's going on down there to budget ineffectively is a moral failing. >> so what happens next? there will inevitably be steep budget cuts, school closures and likely an increase in class sizes across sf. usd enrollment has declined at the district, and that trend, which is happening at public schools statewide, is expected to accelerate in san

francisco in coming years. the board has formed a subcommittee to discuss the budget problems and what cuts to make at another meeting plan next week in the public will have a chance to weigh in and comment at that meeting on may 15th. pam. >> thank you. ali san francisco voters could decide on a proposal to simplify the city's tax code for small businesses. it's all part of an effort to revitalize the city. now, the proposal would expand tax exemptions for more than 2500 small businesses and cut taxes for hotels, arts, entertainment and recreation. the proposal would also remove a tax that penalizes companies for bringing workers back into the office. proponents say it would help bring more life back to downtown. voters could vote on that measure in november. >> our time now, 533. a new milestone for sustainability in san francisco. almost 150 businesses were certified by the city for their environmental leadership. the city's environmental department says

by the u.s. house committee on education and the workforce that same group of lawmakers held some similar hearings for universal presidents over the last few months. now, this will be the first time that they'll hold hearings on anti-semitic ism within public k through 12 schools. these types of hearings, we've seen them happen a lot more often since october 7th. that's when we heard of the hamas attacks on israel. and of course, the israel retaliation in gaza, since it's led to the resignations of university presidents at penn and harvard. berkeley superintendent annika ford morthal is one of three school leaders across the country called to testify in front of this house committee. she'll answer questions alongside representatives from a school district in maryland as well as new york. each have been accused by their local communities, some in court, of facilitating a culture of bullying jewish students and not properly handling complaints. when they arise. in berkeley, complaints have been led by the brandeis center for human rights

and the anti-defamation league. they argue the berkeley unified school district ignored incidents where jewish students were taunted and exposed to language like, quote, kill the jews or, quote, kill israel. their complaints note another incident where an art teacher showed images of people punching through a star of david berkeley school board releasing a statement of support for its superintendent, saying in part, berkeley unified school district stands against anti-semitism, islamophobia and hate in all forms. this is reiterated in the hate motivated behavior policy. the board passed last year, which the superintendent has been charged to implement. now. this house committee hearing will be streamed live from washington, dc. it is set to start in a little more than an hour from now. of course, we'll keep you posted on those updates. for now, we're live this morning from berkeley. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right james thank you. time now. 603 demonstrators around the country urged israel to end its offensive in rafah.

the israeli military says it has seized control of that border crossing at the southern edge of gaza. protesters from seattle to austin, texas, to atlanta took part in what is called hands off rafah rallies. now, pro-palestinian protesters at uc berkeley also held a hands off rafah rally. >> yeah, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members filled sproul plaza. it has been nearly two weeks since the pro-palestine encampment sprouted up at cal, and the number of tents has grown. >> a lot of people from different faiths, from different ethnic backgrounds, from different political beliefs, all here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right now is something that we have the power to impact and power to stop protests. >> organizers want the university to divest its financial holdings in companies that have ties to israel's military. well, stanford university is reminding students

that the encampment at white plaza violates university policy . officials say it goes against a policy on overnight camping and on the equitable use of the plaza. the university says disciplinary cases are proceeding and more names of students are being submitted. some may have their diplomas held while their cases are processed, and stanford is warning encampment members they could be suspended. >> our time is now 604. an arrest was made and the man's in jail. now. after he ran a red light at a busy intersection in san jose and killed a cyclist. it happened yesterday morning at east capitol expressway and center road, about 730 in the morning. investigators say the driver of a red pickup truck was going westbound on capitol expressway and was speeding when he ran a red light. now, the truck first hit a cyclist and then hit another pickup truck. the man on the bike died there at the scene. traffic was shut down for hours in all directions. >> i think everybody just needs

to be aware. i think road safety is everyone's responsibility. so it includes being defensive on your own, right? i'm not sure that there's a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here. if you're following the rules of the road. somebody wasn't. and unfortunately, that's what occurred. >> now, this was the 17th fatal collision so far this year in san jose. and police say that intersection is among the most dangerous in the city for the number of crashes every year. now, san jose mayor matt mehan said in a statement, these deaths are far too often the consequence of distracted and reckless driving, and i applaud the work of our police department and district attorney , who will arrest and prosecute those who put residents at risk on our roadways. >> san mateo county will spend nearly $6 million on affordable housing for farm workers. the county board of supervisors approved the spending for the project, which will prioritize families displaced by the mass shooting that killed seven people last year. the plan calls for buying and installing 47

manufactured homes for farm workers and their families. the homes will be located on five acres near downtown half moon bay, just south of highway one. pittsburgh. here in the bay area, adopting a new general plan, setting a blueprint for the city's future for the next 20 years. it's called envision pittsburgh. it offers a plan for the city's development and economic goals. it makes rooms for thousands of new homes, sets forth new policies for everything from transportation to environmental justice issues. >> right now it's 606, and i do want to mention that we do have a problem when it comes to the water main break in richmond. this is 47th and carlson and quite the scene. east bay mud is here and trying to get a handle on the situation. looks like a whole neighborhood is being affected by this. cars are getting out. it looks like several blocks. this was

worst city in the nation for drivers. san francisco came in number three. the study, conducted by forbes advisor, evaluated driving conditions across 47 densely populated cities. oakland was number one for several reasons, including the high number of deadly crashes, very expensive gasoline prices, and long commute times. miami was number two. houston was number four. >> funeral arrangements are pending for an alameda county dispatcher killed by a suspected drunk driver, 37 year old antoinette finau was driving to work last sunday night when a car broadsided her honda civic at a san leandro intersection. the crash was just blocks from the sheriff's dispatch center. sheriff's deputies, who worked closely with finau were the first on the scene. >> she was coming to work on an overtime shift after she had already completed a regular hour shift, because she is that person. >> she was someone that all of

system that's expected to launch in contra costa county. when fully completed, the system will be 28 miles long. the narrow roadway system will stretch from antioch to oakley and have 56 boarding stations. >> and so you can take a glide car in the future by walking. maybe five minutes, going to an access point, which is a station , a glide phase station, and it takes you to the antioch bart station without ever stopping. always a predictable journey. time >> now the autonomous shuttle can seat up to four passengers, and you'll be able to use an app to request the shuttle the same way you would use an uber or lyft. >> this is something that you can actually see and feel and experience later in a few minutes. >> now, company officials say the project is cheaper than other mass transit services as well, and they say it will only cost a fraction of what it would cost to install railway tracks. now, the first section of the roadway between brentwood and

antioch is expected to be finished by 2027, and the transit network expected to be launched by 2030. pam >> all right. thank you. andre. well, a city in santa clara county teaming up with san jose sharks to bring hockey fans in the south bay, a massive entertainment complex. now, gilroy city council approved a design and construction plan of an ice center that will be fully operated by the sharks. it will feature two nhl sized rinks, a bar and restaurant, a cafe and a fitness center. the rinks will be open to the public. the proposed 100,000 square foot building is scheduled to be open in 2026. >> our time is 615. the san jose sharks will have the number one pick in this year's nhl draft. for the first time in the sharks history. did you hear that cheer? the first pick is expected to be macklin scalabrini of boston university. he's also the son of warriors

the quakes will take on the sacramento republic in the next round of the us open cup. that game will be may 21st. >> all right. time is 616, right back to. so we have big traffic problems in the city of richmond. >> yeah. carlson at 47th are about about an hour and a half ago i heard first reports of this with the water flowing down carlson boulevard near 47th. emergency vehicles on the scene, east bay mud has arrived, and they are reportedly working on the problem. but this water is flowing right down carlson here and right down businesses and homes. so give yourself plenty of extra time if you are driving through the area now. if you are getting off the freeway, i would avoid the carlson exit completely for now. and chp and richmond police do have blocks, they do have closures in place. but again, a lot of water and

also a lot of mud. as you can see in richmond, triple a traffic camera. let's go to another triple a traffic camera. that would be the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see that is backed up all the way out to the maze. san mateo bridge is doing okay. and if you're driving to the san mateo bridge. so far, so good. i want to check in on the south bay now and go to the grid. you can see that there is a little slow traffic here and there, but for the most part, everything seems to be okay. so get it. take advantage of get out on the road early. now let's talk about the weather. here's steve or rosemary. >> sorry i throw you off. good morning sal. yes. so we are looking at warmer weather for today as we reach it looks like what's going to be upper 80s for some inland in the days ahead. giving you a live look here over the bay area as we say, good morning to that beautiful sunrise there. a little bit of golden hue in the sky. mostly clear skies across the bay area, and that transition to the warmer weather occurring. giving

you a look first at the winds. notice all those arrows, even the calm ones coming in from the north, and we have a bit of a northeast flow that is already setting up those winds are going to help really bring those temperatures up right now we're already 60 degrees in san francisco, 60 degrees in brentwood and 54 over san jose. so we do have a little bit of wind. those temperatures are already mild where it is calm. we're starting in the upper 40s areas like santa rosa as well as concord, concord. you're actually a tad cooler compared to yesterday. six degrees warmer at sfo right now, five degrees at san carlos. pulling back here kind of show you the pattern that is settling in for the next few days. we do have the ridge that is beginning to strengthen over the bay area. notice the flow coming in from the north. notice it is also chewing away the fog way off the coastline. so mostly sunny skies for all of us. and as i roll you through the futurecast model, i'm going to show you how this ridge continues to strengthen by thursday, well into canada. meanwhile, this system on the

our newsroom. now to explain the district's budget problems and what has to be done to fix them. good morning ali. >> good morning dave and pam. well, school board members and state education officials agree that a hiring freeze, steep budget cuts and likely school closures will end up being part of the solution to san francisco, unified's budget crisis. a state auditor presented her findings on sf ucsd's budget picture to the board at a meeting last night. she said the district barely meets the minimum financial economic reserve required by the state. parents and community members who read the report criticized the district's focus on administrative spending in the last decade, as well as its lack of budget transparency. >> you haven't had a financial officer for years. page nine calls out the overuse of consultant s. why are we not managing this better? you're going to close schools instead of fix what's going on down there. >> right now we're in a position

where we can at least see the dots that need to connect and so it may feel worse, but having the conversation is the first step to the repair. >> state officials sent a letter to sfusd on friday letting them know that it is assigning some fiscal advisors to the district. those advisors will have approval and veto power over the district's budget decisions for the next two years, so it can recover. now, sfusd has until july to work with those state appointed fiscal advisors to come up with a new plan to fix its deficit and revenue problems. its projected deficit in the next year is $420 million. the san francisco school board has formed a subcommittee to discuss the budget problems and what cuts to make in the public will have a chance to weigh in on that discussion and comment on it. that meeting is scheduled to happen on wednesday, may 15th. back to you. >> thank you. ali. today at a school board meeting in santa rosa, teachers and immigrant parents will call on the oak grove union school district to make bilingual communications a top priority. si se puede.

translation services for those who need it. >> our time is now. 636 the family of a san francisco street performer who was killed by his girlfriend is fighting to keep her behind bars. sarah buchanan was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of jordan sempler, a street dancer who often displayed his breakdancing skills in front of visitors at pier 39. but he was found stabbed to death in november of 2022 at his apartment. his girlfriend, sarah buchanan, received a three year jail sentence, but is expected to be released next month. >> there is a great issue with men that suffer with domestic violence, but it's something that's not visible or it's not, focused on. i see a man that loved his craft, jordan was very happy in bringing smiles to other people's lives and their faces. now the san francisco district attorney's office

issued this statement, quote, we take each case seriously and put on the best case we can based on the facts, evidence and the law to meet our burden of proof. >> in this case, we sought a conviction for murder and the jury returned a conviction of involuntary manslaughter. now sarah buchanan's defense attorney said in part, the verdict was both fair and just because it was based on the applicable law and relevant evidence presented at the trial. the sempler family may file a civil lawsuit against sarah buchanan. >> the alameda county da's office released its annual report on its efforts during the last year. now, the report shows prosecutors saw a slight rise in the number of reports from local law enforcement. charges were filed in about 63% of those cases, district attorney pamela price says her office wants to provide data on specific charges and outcomes, but that will take longer. >> the tracking of the way in

some services, and selling off unused vehicles. officials say no cuts will be made to critical safety services. san francisco voters could decide on a proposal to simplify the city's tax code for small businesses, and it's all part of an effort to revitalize the city. the proposal would expand tax exemptions for more than 2500 small businesses and cut taxes for hotels, arts, entertainment and recreation. the proposal would also remove a tax that penalizes companies for bringing workers back into the office. proponents say it would help bring more life to downtown. the measure could be on the ballot in november. california lawmakers are trying to hold oil companies accountable for spiking gas prices during an overnight meeting. the oversight meeting the state capitol yesterday, the vice president of california's energy commission said there's no clear evidence so far of price gouging. but he did say oil companies are profiting from those price hikes. the meeting comes as the

driver now facing several felony charges in connection to two separate hit and runs in san francisco. authorities say a white mustang was doing donuts at jones and market in the tenderloin yesterday morning. that's where the driver hit the first pedestrian and then took off. now the police tried to pull over the car, but the driver kept going. there was a police chase. it passed by francisco middle school. police say the driver of the mustang hit a 14 year old girl in a crosswalk as she was on her way to school. based on the fact that the individual fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian and continued to drive recklessly and failed to stop at another vehicle collision involving a juvenile pedestrian, he posed a risk to the public.

projects ever. the anaheim city council unanimously approved a plan called disneyland forward, a $2 billion proposal that over the next 40 years will create more attractions, more hotels, restaurants and shops on the west side of disneyland drive. however, the community there is divided on this project. supporters favor the jobs and the growth, while critics worry about congestion, disney plans to announce in august some of the new attractions at a fan event. well, new this morning, the olympic flame has arrived in france ahead of the 2024 summer games in paris. the olympic torch arrived in the seaport of marseille. it was lit to in greece last month and then traveled to france on a three masted ship. it will be carried across france for ten weeks before arriving in paris in time for the opening ceremony of the olympic games, july 26th.
