as israel. israeli forces enter one section of rafah. palestinian people are being told to leave as that cease fire
11:01 am
talk continues. all of this as president biden speaks out about the rise in anti-semitism. plus, san francisco schools face a severe budget crisis with new signs. the money may run out entirely. a live report on the impact some fear it may have on students and teachers. good morning, and thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. i'm ginger conejero saab and i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura are off this midday. first we are starting the with the latest developments out of the middle east where israel is escalating its push into rafah. the israeli military says its forces seized control of the gaza side of the rafah border crossing with egypt. this closes a critical entry point for humanitarian aid . the israeli government says palestinians there were warned to move ahead of the strike. the escalation happened just after hamas announced that it accepted
11:02 am
a cease fire proposal. following weeks of back and forth talks with qatar and egypt. however, israel said the deal is far from its requirements. all this plays out on the international stage. while here in the bay area, students continue to camp out at colleges. nbc bay area's bob redell reports from stanford university. here at stanford university, other campuses in the bay area and throughout the country, you can see there are protesters still camped out here demanding and pushing for peace in the middle east. but it's not clear if that peace is going to be coming anytime soon. israel says that the cease fire deal that the hamas political wing accepted was, quote, far from israel's demands. israel says it is sending a delegation to work on the proposal. cia director bill burns, also in the region, assisting with negotiations. now the idf, that's the israeli military, says it conducted a, quote, very limited counter terrorism operation in eastern rafah. that's the southernmost city in the gaza strip. this was
11:03 am
after dropping leaflets in that region asking roughly 100,000 palestinian civilians to leave the area. however, israel says this is not the start of the large scale ground offensive that prime minister benjamin netanyahu has been threatening for months. like here at stanford, the war in gaza front and center at the san francisco state university campus. that's where university president lynn mahoney yesterday held direct, very public discussions with pro-palestinian students, some of whom set up that encampment a week ago. now they are demanding that the school disclosed investments with companies doing business with israel, and then they want the university to divest themselves from those investments. last night, students at the encampment were feeling that their voices are being heard. i think, honestly, we're feeling pretty good. we're feeling pretty energized about what happened. i think it's just great that we were able to have this dialog with our president, and now we're able to, you know, go back and decide kind of how we want to move forward later today. president biden will deliver a speech during a holocaust remembrance ceremony
11:04 am
where he'll honor the 6 million jewish people killed in the holocaust. he will also denounce anti-semitism. through a spokesperson. the president has indicated, quote, there is no place on any campus or anywhere for anti-semitism. there is no place for hate speech or threats of violence against the jewish people here at stanford university. bob redell nbc, bay area news. thank you, bob. this morning, president biden condemned anti-semitism in the wake of those widespread protests. he made his national address with a united front, joined by both top republicans and democrats at the national holocaust memorial. the president denounced the harassment of jewish people in public places and on campuses, and said they are being demonized on social media. i understand people have strong beliefs and deep convictions about the world, but there is no place on any campus in america for any place in america for anti-semitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind.
11:05 am
the president also raised the concern of propaganda being used to downplay the suffering of jewish people, not just from atrocities committed by hamas. on october 7th, but as far back as the holocaust. in other news, the california department of education is taking control of san francisco unified school district spending due to troubling budget shortfalls. nbc bay area's tom jensen is live in san francisco, where tom, a two person oversight team, now has veto power over the spending in the district. tom that's right. and that team is expected to make a full presentation to the board at a meeting tonight here in san francisco. the team determined that the district is in distressed financial condition and could run out of money by the 2024 2025 fiscal year. san francisco public school enrollment has dropped by about 10,000 students over the past decade in the district has lost tens of millions of dollars
11:06 am
in annual state and federal education funding because of it. it's forced the state to call for a corrective plan to be put in place by the end of next month, and for that oversight team to take control of the spending for the time being. in the meantime, the school district is trying to identify schools for closure, to help save money and to vote on the selecting campuses for closure. could happen in december. and we talked to one local parent who said she's not surprised that it came to this. i have twin boys that are almost 16, and we tried for sfusd for until they were about in third grade and after that when i had to buy their own paper and just constant printer cartridges. i mean, the cuts were just everywhere and, i couldn't keep them in sf, usd anymore. in a press statement friday, district superintendent doctor matt wayne acknowledged improvements are needed and also said we are committed to accelerating our efforts to address the remaining concerns to ensure that san francisco public schools are places where
11:07 am
students can learn, grow and thrive. we should hear a lot more in a public comment period during that meeting tonight with the san francisco unified school district board, where that oversight team will speak. but also, we should hear a lot more from teachers and parents during that public comment period tonight. a lot to look forward to. we're live in san francisco. tom jensen, nbc bay area news. definitely a lot to look forward to. thank you. tom. all right. new at 11 tiktok not going down without a fight. the company now suing the u.s. in an effort to stop enforcement of a bill passed last month aimed at forcing the app's chinese owner to sell the app or be banned in the u.s. in the lawsuit, bytedance, tiktok's parent company, argues that the bill violates the first amendment right to free speech. the department of justice has yet to comment. a san francisco police are trying to find the man who terrorized and insulted a bus full of lowell high school students and other passengers, muni gave video of the incident to sfpd, but have not released
11:08 am
it publicly just yet. however, we are told that the video shows a man yelling racist anti-asian slurs before before taking out some sort of stun gun. the man never used that device, but the mother of one of the students on board says her son is traumatized by what happened and accuses the city of not doing enough to address growing hate crimes in the city. he has to take public transportation every day, as so do a lot of young kids, and there's been a lot of asian hate in our city, but not a lot of, you know, responsive, accountable city. how? she says. eventually her son got off the bus and hid behind a tree. police did catch up with that bus, but when they did, the man had already exited and could not be found. happening now in san francisco. another pretrial hearing for the man who violently attacked paul pelosi. that is underway as pelosi, or as depape, rather awaits sentencing in his federal trial, david depape may be sentenced up to 50 years in his federal case
11:09 am
that is scheduled for may 17th. he attacked pelosi with a hammer after forcing his way into the pelosi home in late 2022. with the state trial still on track and no plea deal in place, jury selection is slated to begin on may 22nd. today, depape is appearing in court as lawyers for both sides review jury selection questionnaires in the south bay. san jose is trying to balance its budget without making major cuts. mayor matt mahan says the city's revenue is short about $5 million, but the city also needs to clear homeless encampments along the waterways in order to be compliant with the clean water act. he says that puts the deficit closer to 52 million. this morning i sat down with the mayor, who hopes the budget can be managed without layoffs or cutting core services, though he says next year might be a different story. unfortunately, this year i think we'll just narrowly be able to avoid layoffs. i am more worried about
11:10 am
next year. we just can't have our labor costs outgrow our revenue growth. we're not the federal government. we're not allowed to just print money. we have to balance our budget every single year. a man also spoke on efforts to prevent crime. he says later this year, there will be more foot patrols by police and the return of bike patrols in downtown san jose to help boost safety. now aside from the news that we're following here in the bay area, we're also seeing some devastating impacts of severe weather in the central part of the country. meteorologist kari hall joins us now with a look at this lingering impact. yeah, so there's been a major tornado outbreak. and there was one at least confirmed person who was dead after a tornado touched down in oklahoma. and let's show you the video of the damage that was left behind in barnsdall, in the northern part of the state. several homes have been destroyed and piles of the debris as you can see on the screen there can be seen for miles. and there were also reports of downed power lines and trees. look at that truck. there just smashed under all of
11:11 am
that debris. now let's take a look at some video from holiday inn, a hotel that suffered extensive damage after that storm blew into bartlesville. also in northern oklahoma, thousands of customers there remain without power, and there were two tornadoes confirmed to have touched down in middle tennessee yesterday. several homes were damaged after one of the twisters hit the small city of smithville, about two hours west of knoxville and the national weather service is out there surveying right now, and they have determined that one of those tornadoes was an ef one. so we are still monitoring for that possibility of more severe weather in those areas. and we'll continue to watch out for that as we take a look at the radar. the satellite does still show some activity moving across parts of the ohio valley, and at least for now, we are seeing the severe storms. the really quieting down there. so we'll continue to monitor throughout the day here across the west, all across the bay area, we're

seeing high pressure build and that's going to keep it nice and clear for us. very pleasant weather going into the afternoon with a light wind. tomorrow we'll start to warm up. and this is what we've been talking a lot about warming temperatures and also a lot of pollen because if you're suffering from allergies, you can feel it. and in a few days it will feel like summer out there with our temperatures near 90 degrees for the inland areas. but we're still enjoying some nice and normal weather for us for today with highs in the low 70s from the east bay to the north, bay and along the coastline. we're in the 60s, so we'll talk about that warm up coming up in a few minutes. chris and ginger boy, can you feel those allergies? yes, we can hear them. we can see them. apple announces brand new products next on nbc bay area. our scott budman joins us with more on updates and the new focus for the tech giant. plus, moving the bay area forward, the special ribbon cutting happening for a new school playground in the east bay, and the star power support. it's getting

million, so they are concerned about certain types of chemicals that are used in the manufacturing of their current clothing, which they say could be making firefighters sick, maybe even causing cancer. senior investigative reporter bigad shaban is in san francisco to explain how the city now plans to protect our first responders. good morning. later today, lawmakers here in san francisco are poised to vote on a first in the nation ban on certain types of protective equipment for firefighters. it would essentially require the city to purchase brand new uniforms for the department's firefighters by 2026. now, this all stems from concern that the current gear, known as turnouts, are actually manufactured with chemicals proven to cause cancer . so the question is why aren't other alternatives more widely available, and could the fix actually create more hazards for firefighters? we dig into all of that in our investigation that you can watch right now online. that's at nbcbayarea.com. com

slash investigations. all right new at 11. apple is announcing new products. so we brought in nbc bay area's scott budman to talk about what's happening. now. we are talking about some new ipads. finally it's been a long time. yeah. apple hasn't kris renewed the ipad and updated it for a while. and yet what they're trying to do now, i think, is take advantage of the fact that people are feeling the pinch of inflation. laptops are more expensive, so they're making the ipads, which are very thin. now. super light brings them more power, powerful chips, a little bit of ai to say, hey, if you can't afford a laptop and everybody knows apple laptops are the most expensive out there, try one of these. they're also very powerful. they've got multiple screens, good cameras. now you can do a lot with them, and it's kind of a change from how many of us, especially parents, use ipads. like good for reading, good for movies, good to have your kids play games on, but you really don't need all that much power to do that. now these are saying, hey,
11:19 am
if you want to work on them in lieu of a laptop, you can do that. and the prices start for an 11 inch at about $800, for the 13 inch at about a thousand at about $300 for the ipad pro, which gives you extra fast stuff. but a lot of this is saying instead of just recreation and cool things you can do with your ipad at home, with your family, you can now take it into the workplace and be productive. okay, let's say i don't need something that powerful because i just want to stream my show, right? the prices for the old ones have come down. they do. and that often happens with iphones. two when the new stuff comes out, the old stuff is still sold at a discount. i always recommend that because you're still talking about powerful good technology. now you can get an ipad for about $400, the kind that we've been using and probably still have, are down in price, even for a new one. they're just not quite as powerful. and, you know, with the bells and whistles, but they're still fine. there are other tablets out there from google, from lenovo, from amazon
11:20 am
, that also give you a lot of power and a lot of functionality . but i know a lot of people love the apple brand and what it can give, but just know there are a whole lot of price points to get some very impressive technology out there, especially now with these computer chips that are handling all the machine learning and artificial intelligence. and how do we get that into the hands of the masses? largely through these devices next month, apple has its big worldwide developer conference, and i'm pretty sure they're going to say, okay, everybody start using these devices that we all have in our pockets and purses and put ai on them, because that's how it's going to become something that we all use. now, you brought up, i what's apple's story here. like what how are they entering this. it's kind of lagged so far. kris they haven't really made the big leap to say we're an ai company, which is what everybody seems to be doing, because that's what investors want to see. that's sort of the hot, sexy technology right now. apple has slowed that a bit, but now that it's upgraded the ipads, it's laptop where even into a fairly new cycle of
11:21 am
phones, i expect that with the worldwide developer conference, it's going to be 100% about ai. apple investors want to see it. i think the developers want to see it. and a lot of people that are starting to get used to, say, chatgpt on your phone, a very simple way to say, write me this and do that. and it's all where we are with our devices. and apple wants to get in on that because it's not only lucrative, it's really what everybody wants to try. well, and sometimes what we see with apple is it doesn't necessarily have to be that they do it first. they just have to do it better. exactly right. and that's what they want to do. it's usually more expensive, but it's very consumer friendly. and if i can become consumer friendly, that's really how it gets into the mainstream. so we know what you'll be covering next week. yeah, exactly. we know where you'll be. thank you very much. you bet. thank you. scott and chris, write me a nice story. here it is, steph curry's charity is making a big difference for kids in oakland this morning. students at bella vista elementary got to cut the ribbon for their new and improved playground. there it

live look outside in oakland right now. beautiful clear sky. and as of now, once again, the temperature still feels still feels comfortable. let's check in on the sierra where we are seeing the sierra snowpack after that weekend. storm has now been boosted up to 96% of normal around the central sierra. around lake tahoe, and the northern sierra is still at 119% of normal. this, of course, is very important because this is our summer water supply that is doing pretty well, especially after all of the storms that we had over the winter and our water year. rain update is still at a surplus for santa rosa, san francisco and san jose, but it's still lagging behind just a little bit for the east bay. we're going to be dry here, so there's no chance of the east bay catching up any time soon, and we'll see temperatures in the low to mid 70s for today. santa rosa you'll see a high of 75, but then boosted up to 83 tomorrow, while san francisco will be in the low 70s. we'll
11:24 am
see upper 70s for the south bay and then check out thursday. with our temperatures heating up, even more, it will be 85 in san jose and 87 in concord. in napa, for thursday we're in the mid 80s, so we're going to start to see this high pressure building here. and that's going to also ramp up our temperature, shift our wind direction. instead of a nice ocean breeze, we'll have a dry northerly wind. and that will continue at least into the weekend. so let's check out livermore and our ten day temperature trend. we're going from highs in the mid 70s to upper 70s to the upper 80s by friday. and it's still going to be a warm weekend. but temperatures do come down for a little bit before bouncing backn the mid 80s for the inland areas, and that also continues into early next week, with some lower 80s in the forecast. so no more of these 60s and 70s after today at least for the valleys. san francisco will have some fairly mild temperatures today, but warming up by thursday will
11:25 am
be very close to 80 degrees here. and then looking at a slight cool down for the end of the weekend on mother's day. just enough of an ocean breeze to cool down our coastline. while the valleys will still be pretty warm over the next several days. and notice here there's a lot of sunny icons here, so i'm not expecting any rain, at least for the next week. back to you, chris and ginger. thank you carrie, you said it. mother's day hit hit new hope is on the horizon for san jose sharks fans ahead on nbc bay area. the promising player the team is hoping to add to its roster next season and the draft watch party. the tm is hosting. weea'l
