is honoring mexican culture, plus kayaking for a cause. the protesters taking to the san francisco bay and their message for the chevron refinery and campus encampments are growing

at universities in the bay area. we check in with the protesters at sf state after a major encampment was cleared in southern california. we're going to be getting to those stories in just a moment. but first, we want to begin with breaking news. police are investigating. a double stabbing in san jose happened about 530 this afternoon near south king road. and lido way, both victims taken to the hospital with serious injuries. this is right near where cinco de mayo celebrations are taking place, but at this point it is unclear if this is connected to those celebrations. we have calls out to police and a crew at the scene working to learn more. it's otherwise been a peaceful and festive day of celebrations in san jose, from the east side to downtown, people, they filled the streets to mark this important day in mexican culture and history. here's nbc bay area's thom jensen. it all began with a parade from san jose city hall this morning, which took a route to cesar chavez plaza for an all day festival. cinco de mayo has

always been something that we always performed in. it's part of our heritage and it's great to see it back in san jose. it's a really big thing in our family. it's a traditional holiday that we, you know, come out and support and i love the culture. and, you know, we're from mexico. the downtown alive with the colorful dancers, music and lowriders and even our own nbc bay area storm ranger. and over on san jose's east side, our nbc bay area telemundo 48 float was one of dozens rolling down the streets in another parade, people lined the route from the mexican heritage plaza to emma farm park. inside the park, another festival and the music folklorico, dancers and food items in celebration of cinco de mayo. plus a huge showing from more than 70 local car clubs as they rolled out in hundreds of lowriders for the festivities. yeah, this is amazing to have the lowrider

surrounding cesar chavez plaza in downtown san jose. it is expected to reopen around 10:00 on san francisco bay today. an 80 foot sailboat loaded with folks celebrating, of course, cinco de mayo. there you see it. it's the free to be heading out of sausalito yacht harbor en route to a tour of san francisco bay, including the skyline and alcatraz and all the rest included in the price of today's cruise. by the way, margaritas, of course. and the man who is a captain of this schooner san francisco native who can think of no better place to be today than on the water. i grew up in the mission in san francisco. cinco de mayo. it's always kind of a fun, festive day, you know, it's to be able to be on the water is such a different experience from being on land in the city, it's just a great day to be out and enjoy the festivities. at one last note about the free to be the woman who owns the free to be. her first name is marina. of course, it's the perfect name fitting

for a boat owner. got to be named marina. all right. we've been following the cinco de mayo festivities all weekend long. to see our full coverage, go to our website nbcbayarea.com. click on cinco de mayo in the trending bar. well, traffic is flowing again on highway 101, in the south bay after a deadly crash shut down the road overnight. it happened around 130 this morning on southbound 101 north of fair oaks avenue in sunnyvale. the chp says a speeding driver in a honda crashed into the back of a nissan. the honda driver moved over to the shoulder, got out of her car, then started walking away from her car in the roadway. that is when she was hit by a mazda and killed. chp says the driver of the mazda was under the influence. officers arrested her for dui. all lanes reopened just before 4 a.m. just into our newsroom. a deadly shooting in broad daylight near oakland's lake merritt happened right around noon on first avenue near lake merritt. police say they found a person who'd been shot. paramedics responded, but the victim died right there

at the scene. their name has not been released? no arrests have been made. no more pollution. that is a message from a unique protest in the bay climate activists took over part of the east bay demanding changes at the chevron refinery. nbc bay area's christie smith explains what demonstrators want from the global based company in the east bay. after hours on. the bay near the richmond-san rafael bridge, the so-called kayaktivists returned to the shore in richmond this afternoon. this was a peaceful protest out on the water. the kayakers had signs that read pollute no more act now clean air, water and soil for all. it's a global day of action to call out injustices perpetrated. by the chevron corporation. alfredo angulo is with the rich city res. what we're saying is, hey, chevron, you know, the people of richmond deserve a healthy, safe future, and so do your workers, you know? and so

we need to make sure that the refinery is transitioning to sustainable, renewable practices. the group is dedicated to climate justice. we had a all of our folks go out to the wharf, to temporarily block one of the ships to let them know that you know, we are the people of richmond, are tired, and we are a force to be reckoned with. the activists claim low income communities of color are negatively impacted by chevron, and hope their signs and colorful kayaks will. send a message. what's unique about this protest is it's leading with joy and love. you know, there's a lot of like, anger that can be felt towards chevron and towards the fossil fuel industry. but rich city res is very dedicated to making sure that the number one mission is leading with joy. we reached out to chevron. in a statement. the company says it respects the rights of individuals to peacefully express their viewpoints, adding chevron richmond remains focused on safely and reliably provides

essential energy that keeps the bay area moving in richmond. christy smith, nbc, bay area news. the southern california we go where, after weeks of anger, tension and violence, usc students protesting the war in gaza were forced to pack up camp and leave university grounds. this comes after dozens of police officers in riot gear arrived about 4:00 this morning to help campus officers clear that massive encampment. the antiwar groups have been calling on usc and university. nationwide to stop doing business in israel. but today, the university says it warned the protesters of arrests both in person and through social media. one student journalist says compared with what happened at ucla last wednesday, today was peaceful. it was definitely the protesters left without arrest, without fighting dps or lapd. they were chanting, they were loud about their beliefs, but they marched down truesdale avenue to the exit of campus without staying in the tents, without being there. when the encampment was being disassembled. yeah, we mentioned ucla crews are continuing to clean up after the

pro-palestinian encampment there, it was cleared out, a stark contrast to what happened at usc. you might remember ucla last week. demonstrators clashed with police refusing to leave. more than 200 people were arrested during that confrontation. police are maintaining a presence on the campus amid concerns that protesters might come back to try to set up another encamp. now, back here in the bay area, the san francisco state university encampment that began monday is growing and folks occupying these tents are looking forward to an event tomorrow. protesters say school president lynn mahoney will join them on campus for what we are told will be an open negotiation . the demands on the university include disclosing and withdrawing all investments with companies doing business with israel and declaring opposition to what they call the genocide in gaza. it will be hosted here at the quad over our encampment. we're going to be discussing our terms of demands and we are hoping that we come to a concrete conclusion and if we don't, then we'll continue the

work that we are doing now. the spokesperson there says the demands are non-negotiable. university confirms it was just a short time ago. president mahoney will be there on campus tomorrow. well, new record for california travel spending has reached an all time high at more than $150 billion. last year, governor newsom made the announcement in a message taped at the top of the golden gate bridge last year. $150 billion of investment tourists around the globe coming to the great state of california, people coming back not only to visit, but coming back to live as well. okay, so the previous record for travel spending was just under $145 billion. that was in 2019. california holds the largest market share of tourism in the entire country, and it has kept its title as the fifth largest economy in the world. president biden is headed back to the bay area. he's going to be here this week, though it's not clear exactly when he'll be touching down. he plans to attend a fundraiser friday in the portola valley home of billionaire

the suit argues that social media users have the right to control what they see and what they don't see on their feeds. lawsuit was filed by the knight first amendment institute at columbia on behalf of an amherst professor who wants to release a tool called unfollow everything 2.0. the browser extension would let users unfollow all the content fed to them by the algorithm, including content from friends, pages and groups. the thinking is that without the endless addictive feed, users would only see what they want and then leave. meta has declined to comment on the suit, and we're following some breaking news in the south bay. san jose police responding to

two scenes. the first is on south king road near emma prusch park. two people were stabbed around 530, paramedics rushing them to the hospital with serious injuries. now this is right near where cinco de mayo celebrations are taking place, but it is unclear if the two things are connected. meantime, we've also learned a san jose police are diverting traffic downtown. all they will say right now is that it is due to illegal activity and safety concerns. we of course have calls out to police and we'll bring you more information as we get it. berkeley city council is set to vote this week on an ordinance that prohibits housing discrimination, discriminated against polyamorous people, polyamory is defined as having multiple intimate relationships at the same time, with the consent of all concerned. oakland passed a similar law last month. one man pushed for the protections after he claims landlords refused to rent to him after he disclosed he had three partners. oakland's law, recognizing polyamorous families is the first of its kind on the west coast. well, one bay area

city has made the list of fastest growing cities in the state with a population of just over 13,000. emeryville is california's second fastest growing city at the start of 2023, there were about 12,700 people living there. that's a 5% growth rate in the past year, and compared to ten years ago, it's an increase of more than 20. emeryville joins a list of central valley and san joaquin valley cities that are also growing at a similar rate. one reason may be that emeryville's housing production rate has outpaced its population growth. city has encouraged affordable home development for years, easily meeting and exceeding state mandated goals. all right. now to the sierra, where we have a new snow total record for the season on the uc berkeley sierra snow lab says yesterday's storm dropped more than 26in. that makes yesterday the snowiest day at the lab this season. researchers say the second snowiest day was march 3rd. we saw just under 24in of snow.

you'd expect it in march, not in may, but this is what we got. palisades tahoe ski resort celebrating the fresh snow. they also received 26in in 24 hours. the resort is calling it the bay may power day. i like it in recent memory. those photos, i mean, it's one of the favorite things of mine as a kid. if you just go up to it. and yes, right. there's so much and it goes away like the fluffy stuff it is, but there's so many inches. cynthia there. and we are what do for i mean, we have sunshine now. we have sunshine now. but you know what? we have to start looking for our skis and all of our snow gear that we might have put away. we're going to need it for the summer months as well. it was a really stunning week there in the sierra as those models just painted more snow throughout the week. now we're starting to go into clear mode for the bay area, and those snow showers are starting to push on a little bit east. so what's that going to do for our weather? it will be clear and cool again tonight, coming down into those 40, similar to what we had this

morning. so bundle up as you make your way out the door for school and work. there as we go on into the early week, we're going to still be feeling like spring getting a little bit of that breeze, warmer temperatures, just a little bit. and i'm sorry for those of you that are dealing with those allergies. we just have a little bit more to get through and then we'll transition into summer. so we had winter yesterday, spring, early week and then summer like temperatures as we go on into the later portion of it. here's a look at those temperatures for tomorrow morning at least places like in mendocino county. lake county could come down into those upper 30s and then mostly in those 40s for just about everybody else. our temperatures for tomorrow will be about five degrees warmer than what we had today. 60s in san francisco, 66 in hayward. and as we make our way into our inland valleys, mostly in those upper 60s, as we transition on into tuesday, here's where things are starting to warm up under that ridge of high pressure. more 70s on the map, even creeping into those mid 70s for places like martinez, santa rosa and some comfortable 70s down here in los gatos. at 73, as we take it on

in our vance, our models, we will be drying out and heating up right there as we go on into wednesday and thursday. even friday looks to be some of the warmest days that we've had so far this year with 70s and 80s. so let me show you what it does for places out there in cocoa county. lafayette, good afternoon to you. we're going to go from the 60s to start our workweek, transitioning to the upper 70s. by the time that we get on into wednesday and just building continuing on there into 84 by friday, saturday and sunday, still looks nice to start making those plans for mother's day. hint hint as we go on into next weekend. so overall, our 7-day forecast in san francisco, aside from the breezy and somewhat chilly start there in the 60s, we're going to get more of that warming skies. love to live here in california kind of weather there in the city and our inland valley. 60s to 70s to 80s. so like i mentioned, we just had all of these three seasons in one go. i like it. look at that warm, warm, warm, warm, warm all the way through. i'm glad. all right. thank you cynthia. you're

in california. you know that, statewide averages 535 now in the bay area. look at these prices, san francisco, 557 oakland. 547 san jose. 542 it is not difficult to beat those prices, and it's easy to find them under five as well. yeah, yeah. all right. well, apple is set to unveil some new products this week. the tech giant is expected to launch new ipads tuesday. the event with the tagline let loose, let loose. we'll be live streamed on apple's website. usually, the event is prerecorded. tech watchers say they expect apple to unveil new ipads and ipad accessories after no new models were announced last year. countdown to blastoff! after years of delays, tomorrow, boeing is finally set to launch astronauts to the international space station for nasa. boeing plans to launch its starliner rocket from cape canaveral. this is video from a previous launch back in 2019, but the unmanned capsule never made it into orbit because of software problems. boeing tried again in 2022. this
